Why is There Beeswax in My Lip Balm?

At Sage Stone Botanicals, we make 100% cruelty-free skincare products. That means our products are cruelty-free, and every supplier we use is also cruelty-free. We have been awarded a Leaping Bunny certification, which is the most comprehensive cruelty-free certification a company can get.

We are extremely serious about the ingredients that we include in each product. That’s why we wanted to talk about the one ingredient that we use which is made by animals: beeswax.

What is beeswax, anyway?

Beeswax is what makes up the structure of a hive. It’s formed into a honeycomb to store honey and to create living spaces for the bees. However, beeswax, just like honey, is made by the bee.

Female worker bees have eight wax-producing glands in their abdomen. They eat the honey created from a flower’s nectar and produce wax to build their hive.

It’s pretty simple, but also completely amazing. There are very few animals that literally produce the building blocks for their living space.

The moisturizing benefits of beeswax

Bees are amazing creatures that provide us with many benefits. They pollinate our plants, produce delightful honey, and create beeswax. You likely know of the health benefits provided by honey, but you may not have looked into the skincare benefits provided by beeswax.

Beeswax contains anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties when applied to the skin. It not only helps to moisturize, but it seals in moisture. This is especially important in lip balm - as the skin of our lips are often exposed to dryness than the rest of the body. Even in cold weather, lips are usually exposed so that you can talk and breathe. So, sealing in that moisture is incredibly important.

Beeswax also:

  • Contains antioxidants

  • Has antiseptic and antibacterial properties

  • Attracts water, adding extra moisture as time goes on
